My goal is to paint as much of “The Real Florida” as I can.  Future generations need to see what has been—and is still being—lost. There is a need to encourage others to speak up to protect our most valuable treasure. Many things in life can be replaced or rebuilt, but not our greatest possession. It is my hope that by recording the natural beauty of Florida today, people will realize the importance of saving Florida’s natural resources, to avoid being left with only memories.

Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I love all things creative. It’s a constant process of applying new ideas and techniques, working on multiple projects at the same time and attempting unfamiliar techniques. Sometimes, I make a mess, but other times, I surprise myself! I realize that if I don’t try, nothing is going to help me improve. Creating is fun, frustrating and fulfilling for me. It is the best mental therapy out there! I am a heart transplant recipient, and my creativity comes from a wave of emotions. I donate a portion of my proceeds to Donate Life.

Derek Roberts is the award-winning watercolor illustrator of the Brudders Books series and a California-born nature lover who loves painting imaginative worlds for kids. Derek struggled with reading growing up, and because of that, he has a unique ability to connect with children through visual storytelling. He is passionate about helping kids learn how to comprehend words and build their confidence in reading. Derek’s career started in graphic design before transitioning into storyboarding, animation, and ultimately illustration. He hopes his illustrations will inspire children’s minds to go into creative, happy places like picture books do for him. Derek holds a bachelor’s degree in Animation from Laguna College of Art & Design. Derek lives in Land O’ Lakes, Florida with his author wife, Kristin, where they enjoy hiking, biking and learning through nature.
